The latest 'shock horror' story in the news is the revelation that horse meat has been found in burgers and ready meals, which of course have been removed from sale and destroyed rather than offend our sensibilities. Apart from destroying perfectly edible food when people in other lands are starving, am I alone in thinking the underlying facts more worrying?
The Swedish firm Findus, employs a French company, Comigel, to make its ready meals. It gets meat for its factory in Luxembourg from another French company, Spanghero, who in turn employ an agent in Cyprus, who uses an agent in the Netherlands, to source meat from an abattoir in Romania. All this to provide cheap meat for the 'Value' end of the market??? The logistics alone should ensure that this product would cost more than one locally and legally sourced, which can only point to one conclusion...black market burgers anyone?
